Do I need to book the Hue dinner cruise on the Huong River in advance?
Short answer? Yeah, you should absolutely book the Huế dinner cruise in advance — especially if you’re visiting during peak season (April to September), weekends, or any holiday period.
Let me explain why, without sugarcoating it
Back in early May 2024, I was in Huế with two friends. It was a random Wednesday. We thought we could just stroll down to the Toa Kham Wharf around 5 PM and hop on one of those dragon boats for dinner and some Ca Huế tunes. Sounded easy. But nope.

Everything was full
Even the staff at the riverside stalls told us that most dinner cruises — especially the ones that serve actual food (not just music + sightseeing) — were booked out at least a day in advance. Some of the better-rated boats were even booked two or three days ahead. And that was on a weekday.
We ended up sitting by the river with street food instead. Still decent, but not what we came for. So yeah, lesson learned.
If you’re looking at the popular Huong River dinner cruise experiences — like the ones that offer:
- a proper set menu with local dishes (think bánh khoái, cơm sen, nem lụi)
- live Ca Huế music performed onboard, and a slow float past Trường Tiền Bridge lit up at night
- Those don’t usually have endless seats. Most boats are small. Around 30–40 guests tops, depending on the setup.
Some of the more intimate ones only seat 15–20 people. And they don’t always run every night, especially in the rainy season (October to January). That’s another reason you’ll want to check ahead.
Where to book?
- You can go with the hotline. Click to book via WhatsApp ›
- Your hotel or homestay — most of them know which operators are reliable.
- Reputable travel sites, Hoi An Explorer
- Or just message the operators directly on Facebook — some of them reply fast and speak decent English.
We used a local agency called “Huế Private Cruise” for our second attempt, a few days later. Cost us about 650,000 VND/person, which included the boat ride, dinner (4 courses), tea, and music. Honestly worth every đồng.
Bottom line
If your heart’s set on that romantic, quiet, floating dinner on the Perfume River, don’t leave it to chance. Book it. Even if it’s just a day before. Don’t do what we did. You don’t wanna be sitting on the riverbank with a bánh mì, watching everyone else sail by.
